Kelsey's putt-putt boat experiment

R14'ers go to Zone Day:

Jake is going to Zone Day for 1500m, 800m, high jump, discus and 200m. Anna is doing 1500m, 800m and discus. Olivia is doing long jump, and Kelsey is doing 1500m and 800m. AJ is also running in the 1500m and 800m.
Go Room 14'ers!

Group Day results:

Group Day was tiring for Anna and Jake, because they had to do every event. Jake won high jump, and was 2nd in the 1500m and 800m, and 3rd equal in 200m. He also came 4th in the 400m and 5th in the finals of the 100m.
Olivia came 1st in long jump and she fell over and bruised her tail bone.
Cody didn't go very well, because he came 4th to last - he didn't have any water. He learnt that he needs to drink water to help him win. He was also versing hard people, too.
Jamie-Lee was very frustrated because she was ONE cm away from coming 3rd in shotput!
AJ's first race was the 1500m. He shot out at the start with Jake. He kept his pace up and won by 200m! In the 800m, it was AJ and another boy out at the lead, but at the final sprint, AJ won!
Chris feels pretty good about coming first in the 200m.
Kelsey came 2nd in the 1500m and 2nd in the 800m, and tied for 4th in the 400m.
Dana came 4th in the 800m and she doesn't know where she came in the 1500m. Group Day was exciting, because she was representing her school.

The Spelling Man Returns

The Spelling Man has now got 6 golds, 3 silvers and 7 bronze. Cody has been on target since his last update, and next week he hopes to improve by winning more silver, gold and bronze medals.
Good luck, Cody!

Sarcomere inhomogeneity is increased in failing cardiac trabeculae

Today, we had a special visit from a scientist named Alex Anderson. He uses rats and a special chemical to kill them. He then uses muscles from the rat to find out how the muscle reacts if he puts chemicals with the muscle. He has a really interesting job. He gets to work with lots of interesting pieces of equipment like lasers and microscopes that zoom in closer than a cell.
His dream experiment would be to design and build a robotic arm that is controlled by the brain and the nervous system.

Zyra paints Aimee

This is my painting of Aimee and it was inspired by Paul Gauguin. Paul Gauguin's style is painting the people around him, and seeing as Aimee was sitting next to me I painted her.
We had to do a black outline of everything, and not apply too much detail and use bright colours.
My painting looks cool and pretty, but I forgot to put Aimee's glasses on her.

It's interesting and exciting at the same time.

CJ's Spelling Success

Our new boy, CJ, has been learning new spelling words each week - it's not easy and it's not hard, he says.

Last week he learnt to spell 15 words correctly like present, which after he learnt how to spell it, it was easy!

The NEW Tom!

Miss Harris commented that Tom's behaviour and attitude has improved a lot since the beginning of the year. Ms Clydesdale says 'Well done' because Tom has worked really hard to improve his behaviour and attitude, and other teachers have noticed the improvement too!

Go Tom!

Potato Power!

Yesterday was Manual at View Road School and we had to plan our own potato dish. Arabella and Kelsey decided on something that they called 'Spudtastic' also known as potato puffs. They got their recipe from Alison Holst's 'Best Potato recipes'. Here's what they did:
We brought in all the ingredients that we needed that Miss Harris didn't already have. Kelsey cut the potatoes, so Arabella could make mashed potatoes. She also diced the ham, grated the cheese, and cut the crusts off the bread and cut the bread into quarters on 3 pieces of bread, then placed the 12 pieces of bread into cup cake cases, while Arabella was making the mashed potatoes.
When the mashed potatoes were done, we mixed the ingredients together with an egg that we had cracked into the bowl, and then we spooned the mixture into the 12 cup cakes cases on top pf the bread.
We put it in the oven and wait 20 mins, and put it on fan bake for 5 minutes to hold the ingredients together.
We took them out and paper scissors rock to see who would choose their 'Spudtastic' first - Arabella won, so she chose first.
Miss Harris asked if she could try one, because they looked really yummy and were delicious!
She said that they were really good, that we worked well together and we kept our area tidy and organised, and cleaned while they were in the oven.
When we got back to school, Miss Harris had already phoned Waiuku Primary School to tell our teachers that we were the best Year 7's in all of Waiuku!
We felt really fantastic, because there are lots of different schools in Waiuku and we were the best! Our teachers were impressed and both Kelsey and Arabellas' mums said that they have to make it for dinner one night.

NZ Tae Kwon Do champion Niketa beats the Aussies!

Room 14 recently welcomed Niketa into the class. She talks about her trip to Australia this year:
I was personally invited to go there by Mr Weston, a black belt instructor in Australia for the National Tae Kwon Do competitions. He met me at the NZ Tae Kwon Do competition in Wellington. He was refereeing my sparring match and he said that he wanted me to show his students, because I am really good.
I won gold in the NZ Nationals which is pretty cool!
When I got over there, I went to one of his club training on the Thursday before the nationals and I was given an Aussie jacket and an Australian Tae Kwon Do badge.
At the Australian Nationals I was entered into 3 events - specialty, sparring and patterns. In patterns, I went up against several people of a higher belt than me and I won gold!
In the next event, specialty, I had to kick a board that was abover my head with my foot and the other kick was a flying side kick. I had to run up and jump over a piece of string that was at my shoulder height and I got silver.
The last event was sparring and I went up against a few people who were taller than me and I got a bronze.
On the second day, Mum and I went to watch and I was presented with a Most Spirited plaque.
I was proud of myself, because I was the only person from NZ to go over and Mr Weston said he wanted to see me next year Mum said yes, we could go next year - I'm looking forward to competing there again next year!

We told her about our roles and the steps - scriptwriting, making props, practising, filming and lastly editing all the parts together to make the movie.
We are excited and overwhelmed that our group was chosen.
