R14'ers go to Zone Day:
Group Day results:
Group Day was tiring for Anna and Jake, because they had to do every event. Jake won high jump, and was 2nd in the 1500m and 800m, and 3rd equal in 200m. He also came 4th in the 400m and 5th in the finals of the 100m.
Olivia came 1st in long jump and she fell over and bruised her tail bone.
Cody didn't go very well, because he came 4th to last - he didn't have any water. He learnt that he needs to drink water to help him win. He was also versing hard people, too.
Jamie-Lee was very frustrated because she was ONE cm away from coming 3rd in shotput!
AJ's first race was the 1500m. He shot out at the start with Jake. He kept his pace up and won by 200m! In the 800m, it was AJ and another boy out at the lead, but at the final sprint, AJ won!
Chris feels pretty good about coming first in the 200m.
Kelsey came 2nd in the 1500m and 2nd in the 800m, and tied for 4th in the 400m.
Dana came 4th in the 800m and she doesn't know where she came in the 1500m. Group Day was exciting, because she was representing her school.

Athletic Champions
Tuesday next week, 10 students from Room 14 are going to Athletics Group Day at Sandspit School.
We are versing all different schools in Waiuku. Our goal is to get to Zone Day for some of the events.
Anna and Jake are in every event that is available. Jake wants to go to Zone Day for at least half of the events, and Anna wants to go to Zone Day for the 800m and long jump.
Good luck Room 14'ers!

Potato Power!
Yesterday was Manual at View Road School and we had to plan our own potato dish. Arabella and Kelsey decided on something that they called 'Spudtastic' also known as potato puffs. They got their recipe from Alison Holst's 'Best Potato recipes'. Here's what they did:
We brought in all the ingredients that we needed that Miss Harris didn't already have. Kelsey cut the potatoes, so Arabella could make mashed potatoes. She also diced the ham, grated the cheese, and cut the crusts off the bread and cut the bread into quarters on 3 pieces of bread, then placed the 12 pieces of bread into cup cake cases, while Arabella was making the mashed potatoes.
When the mashed potatoes were done, we mixed the ingredients together with an egg that we had cracked into the bowl, and then we spooned the mixture into the 12 cup cakes cases on top pf the bread.
We put it in the oven and wait 20 mins, and put it on fan bake for 5 minutes to hold the ingredients together.
We took them out and paper scissors rock to see who would choose their 'Spudtastic' first - Arabella won, so she chose first.
Miss Harris asked if she could try one, because they looked really yummy and were delicious!
She said that they were really good, that we worked well together and we kept our area tidy and organised, and cleaned while they were in the oven.
When we got back to school, Miss Harris had already phoned Waiuku Primary School to tell our teachers that we were the best Year 7's in all of Waiuku!
We felt really fantastic, because there are lots of different schools in Waiuku and we were the best! Our teachers were impressed and both Kelsey and Arabellas' mums said that they have to make it for dinner one night.

Testing!
We have started testing to gather data for reporting back to whanau later this term and some interesting results have started to come through.
So far Room 14 has completed the IKAN test (Maths knowledge) and Basic Facts test.
IKAN results:
Arabella and Chris both scored a massive Stage 8 (the highest stage) jumping 2 Stage levels - they are expected to be at Stage 6!
Zyra, Eleanor, Kelsey, Jake and Scott jumped one Stage to reach Stage 6. The remainder of the class maintained their levels from the beginning of the year.
Basic Facts results:
Arabella jumped 3 sub-levels and scored 4A! Sophie and AJ improved 2 sub-levels and scored 3P.
Scott and Eleanor both moved up 1 sub-level, while Jaime-Lee, Tom, Jake, and Cody remained sitting comfortably on 4A.
At Year 6 the children are expected to be at Level 3, while at Year 8 they should be at Level 4, so for our Year 7's at this stage of the year, they should at least be sitting on 3A ready to move into 4B.
Remember that Basic Facts is a weekly homework activity that students so be doing, along with a minimum of 1 hour per week on Mathletics.

Zone to Champion of Champions!
Kelsey feels happy that she came 2nd in the Zone Cross-country for the Year 7 girls. It was the highest placing out of all the Waiuku Primary School students who raced today, but she is still annoyed that she didn't beat Savannah! Her dad cheered both her and Anna on, and her mum took them to McDonalds and they missed the prize-giving because they didn't know there was one.
Anna is proud that she came 16th and just made it into the Champion of Champions in Auckland with Kelsey.
AJ came 4th so he will be going to the Champion of Champions, too. He was right close to Finn until the end when Finn sprinted off and came 2nd. AJ felt pretty cool about coming 4th and in the Champion of Champions his goal is to make the top 10!

2nd at Group Day
We were determined to win! We lined up in our age groups and the clappers went. The first corner we got out in front, and Kelsey stayed in front all the way until the very end of the race. A metre or so away from the finish line, Savanah from another school overtook her and won!
Kelsey felt happy that she made it to Zone, but was disappointed that she didn't win.
AJ stayed out in front for the first half of the race, then Finn pulled out in front and started getting away from him. But AJ made sure that he didn't get out of site, and AJ was only beaten by 5 metres at the end! The last hundred metres, he couldn't feel his legs and felt like he would faint. He is a little bit disappointed because last year, he came first. He is going to beat Finn at Zone!

Group Day here we come!
Yesterday, we participated in the school's cross-country and out of the Year 7 girls, Kelsey was first, Anna was second, Dana was third and Eleanor was fourth - all these brilliant runners are from the one and only Room 14!
This means that we qualify to represent Waiuku Primary at Group Day.
We had to do 3 laps around the school and we were absolutely puffed!
Kelsey comes first!
Yesterday was cross-country for the junior and senior classes. The Year 7 girls race was at 1.45pm. We had to do 3 laps around the school block and we had to hold our hand out and have a vivid line drawn on our hand for every lap. I came FIRST out of the Year 7 girls! I was tired around the last corner, because it's a bit of a hill, but the finish was only a little bit away so I kept running. I'm happy because I ran the whole thing and I came first. Now I'm going on to Group Day and if I make it into the top 8, I go on to Zone.

The Commonwealth Games Matrix
We have to complete 60 points from 48 tasks in the Commonwealth Games matrix. We can score 1 - 6 points depending how difficult the task is.
We can do it out of school time and that's good because we will probably finish quicker and complete more tasks.

Kids for Kids fantastic night!
Eleanor, Sophie, Arabella, Shay, Kelsey, Sian and Zyra had a spectacular time last night singing in the Kids for Kids concert at the Pukekohe Town Hall.
We were so proud of them as they captured the audience's attention and lit up the hall with excitment and spectacularly super sweet singing!
Tia, another Waiuku student performed 'Over the rainbow' like a professional.
It was so much fun for both the children and the audience.

Recycled Instruments
This recycled tambourine was made out of an old stove from around the top of the elements.
I designed it from a normal tambourine, but I wanted it to be unique, by putting the clickers in the middle instead of on the outside.
My dad drilled the holes through it and I held the two pieces together while he screwed three bolts to hold the pieces together. I didn't paint it because it's stainless steel.

The Hydrology Cycle by Kelsey
Water travels in an endless cycle between sea, sky and land. It is the only thing that can change into solid, liquid or gas.
Water can become lots of different things but whenever it changes it is still water. First a GLASS OF WATER is drunk from the tap, second you either PERSPIRE or go to the TOILET, from there the LIQUID goes through SEWERAGE PIPES and a treatment station. Then it makes its way into the ocean, where the sun EVAPORATES the water and it turns into a GAS. Next it CONDENSES into CLOUDS and when the clouds become saturated we get PRECIPITATION (it rains) (liquid). Then the rain FREEZES into ice on the top of mountains and melts and RUNS OFF into lakes, rivers or AQUIFIER. From here it is cleaned, filtered and treated and then pumped via pipes to our taps and into your glass (YUM).
Without water we would be a lifeless planet so we need to STOP Global Warming, STOP polluting our water and we need to save our water. So next time you go to get a glass of water, just think what an amazing journey that water has been on.
